IMPROVING SPEED
Can I expect to achieve 56k over existing phone lines? Not all 56k modems are created equal, yet all of them try to get you the best connection possible. Naturally, some modems will do a better job than others. This means that while PegaNet has the ability to connect you at the highest possible 56k access, connection speed still has to be negotiated by your modem, which will probably dictate a slower speed. The condition of your line to the telephone company will determine the actual performance level achieved. Some lines will support >50Kbps all the time, while other lines are not capable of supporting it at all. A pure connection speed of 56k is unachievable due to a FCC imposed
regulation which limits speeds traveling over a phone line to 53k.
Depending on your location, average connection speeds of 42k to 48k should
be expected. There are three different types of 56k modems available: K56flex, X2, and v.90. Whatever kind of 56k modem you have will follow one of these "standards". Officially, v.90 has been declared the industry standard for 56k connections. Most modem manufacturers offer free upgrades from previous standards (either K56flex or X2) to v.90. It is generally recommended that if your internet provider supports
v.90 connections, you should consider upgrading your modem to the v.90
standard.
